What a blacklist listing actually does to your mail
When a receiving mail server accepts a connection from your IP, one of the first things it does is query a handful of DNS blacklists. This happens before your message content is examined, before authentication is evaluated, and in many cases before the recipient address is validated. If your IP is listed on a registry that receiver trusts, the connection can be closed immediately with a rejection that references the listing. No amount of good content, careful authentication or clean list hygiene overrides that, which is why a listing is worth treating as an incident rather than a metric.
Not all listings carry the same weight. Some registries are consulted by a large share of the world's mail servers; others are used by a handful of operators or are advisory only. A single listing on a widely trusted registry can cut your delivery in half overnight, while several listings on obscure registries may produce no measurable effect at all. Results on this page are therefore grouped into critical, important and informational tiers so you can spend your effort where it changes the outcome.
The common causes of a listing
- Spam traps. Seeded addresses that exist only to catch senders who did not obtain consent. Purchased, scraped or very old lists are the usual source. A single trap hit on some registries is enough.
- Volume spikes on a cold IP. Sending large volume from an IP with no history looks like a snowshoe spammer. Warming up gradually avoids this.
- A compromised account or script. An exploited web application or a stolen SMTP credential relaying through your server will generate abuse reports attributed to your IP, not the attacker's.
- Missing reverse DNS. Several registries list IPs with no PTR record on the grounds that legitimate mail servers always have one. This check reports your PTR alongside the listings.
- Inherited reputation. Cloud IPs are recycled. An address that was abused by its previous tenant can already be listed on the day you receive it, which is the single best reason to check an IP before you send anything from it.
Getting delisted without making it worse
Fix the cause before you request removal. Every registry runs its own process, normally a lookup form that reveals why the IP was listed and offers self-service removal. Some delist automatically once abuse stops for a set period; others require a manual request. What is consistent across all of them is that requesting removal while the underlying problem is still active gets you relisted quickly, and on several registries repeated premature requests extend the cooldown before you can ask again.
Once you are clean, keep it that way by monitoring rather than reacting. Blacklist status changes without warning and nobody notifies you. Checking your sending IPs on a schedule is what turns a two-week deliverability collapse into a two-hour one. If your PTR record is missing or wrong, fix that first — it is set with whoever provides your IP, not with your DNS host, and the DNS record generator shows where it belongs relative to your other records.

- What is a DNSBL?
- A DNSBL, or DNS-based blackhole list, is a list of IP addresses published over DNS that receiving mail servers query in real time. When your sending IP appears on one, the receiver can reject, quarantine or throttle your mail before it reaches an inbox. Checking is a plain DNS lookup, which is why it is free and instant.
- Which blacklists does this check?
- It queries every registry in the same list the desktop app uses, grouped into three tiers. Critical registries such as Spamhaus ZEN, Barracuda, SpamCop and CBL have the largest effect on deliverability. Important registries such as UCEPROTECT, Mailspike and Abusix are widely consulted. Informational registries are worth knowing about but rarely block mail on their own.
- I am listed. How do I get removed?
- Fix the cause first, then request delisting. Every registry publishes its own removal process, usually a lookup form on its site. Requesting removal before the underlying problem is resolved almost always results in a repeat listing and, on some registries, a longer cooldown before you can ask again.
- Why would a clean IP suddenly get listed?
- The most common causes are sending to spam traps from a purchased or scraped list, a sudden volume spike on a cold IP, a compromised account or script relaying through your server, missing reverse DNS, and inheriting a previously abused IP from your hosting provider. Checking an IP before you start sending on it is worth doing for exactly this last reason.
- Does being on one list matter?
- It depends entirely on which one. A listing on a critical registry such as Spamhaus ZEN will affect a large share of your delivery immediately. A single informational listing may have no measurable effect. That is why results here are grouped by tier rather than presented as one number.
